In the context of the Corvaceira reforestation project, in the town of Mangualde in Viseu, and in pursuit of reducing the carbon footprint in the execution of its reforestation projects, Mota-Engil ATIV resorted to innovative technologies with a neutral carbon footprint.
In a partnership with the company TerraFarmers, drones were used that allow the planting of trees through seedballs, in a technology that protects the seed until its fixation in the soil.
Regarding biodiversity, and through the same process, seeds of melliferous plants and cereals were used, which allow attracting and retaining the existing fauna.
Planting with seedballs is a low-cost and low-impact solution for the reforestation of native species, providing various supplementary nutrients, minerals, and other additives if necessary.
Furthermore, the reduction in the carbon footprint is significant, given that the drones are electric and do not consume fossil fuels. On the other hand, it is also an added value, allowing reforestation in lands or areas that are more rugged, steep, and difficult to access for people and machines.
The development of projects like Corvaceira allows Mota-Engil ATIV to contribute to the recovery of land degraded by biotic and abiotic factors, as well as to restore the forest landscape with endemic species, with the creation of a biodiverse grove and the creation of habitats dedicated to the preservation of wildlife.
