Biodiversity Project in the Landfill of Figueira da Foz

Mota-Engil ATIV is responsible for the Biodiversity Project at the Figueira da Foz Sanitary Landfill, integrated into ERSUC, which was deactivated.

The main objective is the recovery and preservation of land altered by human activity, following a strategy to restore native flora and fauna.

In the recovery of this type of area, various approaches can be used; however, after analyzing previous studies, the decision was made to control invasive species by restoring the area through the planting of native species, thereby reestablishing the indigenous flora.

The activities began in March 2024 with the control/eradication of invasive exotic species, based on the preliminary study conducted by Mota-Engil ATIV.

In June, the baseline of fauna and flora will be established throughout the perimeter of the Figueira da Foz Sanitary Landfill.

It is also planned to install shallow ponds to create habitats for fauna, as well as a dry meadow (through hydroseeding) with native species, aiming to stabilize the soil and restore wild flora and fauna, thereby recovering the ecosystem.

The project also includes the inventory of natural regeneration and monitoring to assess the recovery of soil, fauna, and flora, and to establish new actions if necessary.

It may also be possible to recover the environmental functionality and ecosystems of this area, potentially transforming it into a recreational area for the population.

This is yet another challenging project aimed at promoting sustainability in environmental, social, and economic aspects.
