Reforestation in Cantanhede

The work began in November 2022 and is currently underway, including clearing, furrow opening, and the planting of maritime pine. It is anticipated that the total afforestation (1,500 hectares) will be completed very soon.

More than 1.5 million trees have already been planted by Mota-Engil ATIV in the reforestation project of the common land in the parish of Tocha – Forest Perimeter of the Dunes of Cantanhede, which was affected by the October 2017 fire.

The work began in November 2022 and is currently underway, including clearing, furrow opening, and the planting of maritime pine. It is anticipated that the total afforestation (1,500 hectares) will be completed very soon.

“The task is time-consuming. Each worker plants one hectare per day. In pre-opened furrows, they make holes, place fertilizer, and plant a maritime pine. The plants are six to seven months old, which increases the chances of survival,” explained Pedro Augusto, Division Director of Forestry at Mota-Engil ATIV.

In addition to the operations for controlling spontaneous vegetation (acacias and others), the project has been carried out with soil preparation for the planting of maritime pine, stone pine, black poplar, black alder, and white willow.

Our forest is fundamental in mitigating climate change. And it is with this reality in mind and to revive the burnt areas and prevent more similar disasters from happening that Mota-Engil ATIV provides deforestation and reforestation services, adapted to the needs of each Customer.

Yet another challenge for Mota-Engil ATIV’s landscaping area, which has been specializing in the operation of prevention and recovery of burnt areas using cutting edge technology at the service of the forest.
