Maintenance of the Praça do Império Fountain in Belém

Consolidating the long-standing partnership with Lisbon City Council (CML), Mota-Engil ATIV once again ensures the contract for the cleaning, operation and maintenance of the Luminous Fountain and the East and West Lakes (Horses) of the “new” Praça do Império in Belém.

Built for the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940, this piece is of great artistic and heritage value. Its dominant motif is a central water jet, reaching a height of 25 meters, surrounded by vertical and converging fountains and luminous sprayed water curtains.

The service provision includes all preventive and corrective maintenance work on the existing hydraulic system, electromechanical equipment, and electrical installations, as well as the treatment of the ornamental waters.

During the time that the requalification contract lasted, improvements and preventive maintenance were carried out at the level of cleaning and checking the working condition of the fountain, particularly the mechanical and electrical systems. From then on, the water element was maintained until its start-up.

“For Mota-Engil ATIV, it is always a challenge, since for CML, this fountain is one of the most important, especially due to its location, historical and touristic setting,” said Ricardo Fonseca, contract director, adding that it is an element that gives prestige, “even more so for a Customer with whom there is a connection of trust and who continues to invest in us, on the path of improving water and energy efficiency”.

At Mota-Engil ATIV, protecting public health, ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of water resources are top priority commitments for the preservation of the planet and future generations.

The Luminous Fountain is the most emblematic element of the now renovated Garden of Praça do Império, in Belém, redeveloped by the Lisbon City Hall and inaugurated on 14 February by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas.
